The Musicianer was written in honor of the bassist Richard Davis.

The tune appears on New Designs as a quartet with bass, trumpet, piano and drums. Written for the melody to be played on bass, the bridge section has demanding interval leaps played by bassist Marcos Varela who solos brilliantly on the tune and with soul.
