Penumbra is the seventh studio release for Markus Rutz as a leader. The word penumbra is defined as something that covers, surrounds, or obscures; a surrounding or adjoining region in which something exists in a lesser degree. The etymology is New Latin, from Latin paene almost + umbra shadow. Almost shadow. We know that there are forces of nothingness that exist and hopes can be dampened, while at the same moment looking for the light and choosing this path.
The quartet setting for the album shines light on each one of us in the starting with Innuendo and the propulsive yet sensitive ensemble accompaniment and drum soloing of Gregory Artry. Dorham’s Epitaph has breathing room for the trumpet expressions of leader Markus Rutz in this duet take of the Kenny Dorham composition. Bronzeville is illuminated by the bass tones and expertise of Christian Dillingham. The recoding closes with One Month’s Time interpretive virtuosity of pianist Adrian Ruiz from the opening chord, sauntering into his solo and adding his signature touch to the ending. trumpet & compositions by Markus Rutz except where noted Recorded by Brian Fox at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois Sound mixing & mastering by David Stoller at The Samurai Hotel in Astoria, Queens New York design photos by Tuan Huynh
